A good domain name is a name that is easy to remember, pronounce, and spell. Having hyphens, symbols or numbers may confuse and make the domain more difficult to remember and spell unless they were used in branding your domain name. Also, having a domain name that includes words or a phrase relevant to the type of site you plan to use the domain for helps your customers draw a connection with the domain and your site as well as increase your exposure on search engines. Q. It seems as though all countries have their own domain extension… why doesn't the United States have one?
Is ours .COM? A. A. The United States now has its own extension. Namesonic is accepting .US registrations. Please call 1.866.988.9993 to order yours today! Q. I would like to get free web hosting. Will I need to buy a domain name from you? A. Many companies such as Geocities and Fortunecity can provide you with free web hosting. The drawback over free hosting is that they will display either pop-up ads or banners on your website. You will not need a domain name to use one of these services, however many people purchase domain names and have them forwarded to their free hosting page. The reason people do this is because a free hosting company will typically provide you a long URL such as www.geocities.com/member/mypage.com. With a domain name you can have www.yourname.com forward to your free page and make it much easier for people find your website. Q. Do I need to have a website or intend to have a website to purchase a domain? A. You do not need to have a website or plan to have a website to purchase a domain. In order to purchase a domain, however, you will need to supply 2 domain name server (DNS) addresses, which will be provided by your hosting provider or domain registrar. Using the DNS address provided by your registrar is commonly referred to as domain parking. Q. How do I add email to my domain name? A. The procedure for adding email to your domain will vary depending on which registrar you used to register your domain with. Registrars offering hosting packages will also usually offer email services. There are some registrars who do not offer hosting, so you may need to find a hosting company who will supply you with email services. Q. Are .TV, .CC, and .WS Generic top-level domains? A. These domain extensions are actually country level domains that behave like .COM, .NET and .ORG. Much like the GTLDs, they are available for anyone to register. The following lists what each of these extensions officially stand for (country names) as well as their intended purposes: .TV - Tuvalu - Television or high bandwidth sites |
