Domain Transfer Guide

Welcome to The Domain Transfer Guide
Welcome to our guide on transferring your domain names. By reading this guide you will gain a full understanding of the domain transfer process and be able to determine for yourself if a domain transfer is right for you.

The automated transfer process that Namesonic uses is similar to the process used by almost all other registrars. Even if you do not plan to transfer your domain to Namesonic you should still find this guide helpful.

Why do people transfer their domain names?
People transfer their domain names for three common reasons:

  • To Save Money - domain registration prices have come down quite a bit over the last few years. Pricing for domains typically ranges from $12.95 to $35.00 per year. By transferring to a registrar with lower pricing you can save as much as 70% per year.

  • To Receive Better Customer Service - many people choose to move their domains to another company in order to receive better customer service. Some registration companies take up to a week to answer email support questions and do not offer toll free phone support.

  • To have more avaliable services - Many Registrars offer free services such as domain forwarding and email forwarding. At some registrars these same services could cost up to $20 each.

  • Are there any fees to transfer my domains to another registrar?
There is no fee to transfer your domain, however you will be required to add at least one year to your domain registration term. This year will be added to your current term and not a single day of your registration term will be wasted. So for example if your domain expires in 37 days and you transfer it for one year, you will not have to renew your domain again for 37 days + 365 days = 402 days.

Rates will depend on which registrar you choose to transfer your domains to. Namesonic charges $12.95 for a 1 year transfer, which will add 1 year to your current expiration term. Be careful of domain registrars that charge a low transfer rate for the first year and then raise the price back to $35 for each year thereafter.

When can I not transfer a domain name?
You cannot transfer a domain name if:

  • Your domain has expired or if payment at your current registrar is outstanding
  • The domain is involved in a legal dispute over ownership
  • The domain name has been registered for less than 60 days
  • We also do not reccomend a domain transfer if your domain is within 5 days of expiry
